The Compassionate Integration Process

“An Attuned Legal Process for Family Disputes”

Hosted by Lotus Law and WholeHearted.

An immersive 3 day certification training in the Compassionate Integration Process (CIP), a dynamic approach to resolving family disputes in a trauma-informed way that is more effective, aligns with our humanity, and adheres to professional standards.

The CIP is a structured hybrid-protocol and a relational attunement skill that allows the holistic expansion and compassionate integration of current family law and alternative family dispute resolution processes. Learn the structured CIP protocol from Nicolle Kopping-Pavars and Natalie Derbyshire. (see bios below) Understand the impact of trauma and how to navigate it within the CIP through relational attunement skills taught by David Young and Heather Thalheimer. (see bios below)

Treating the entire family as a unit, the CIP acknowledges the practical and emotional needs of the whole family, not just the individual parties. This systemic approach redefines the concept of conflict by responding to family disputes through a trauma-informed lens.

Why is this process different than any other process?

  • The Compassionate Integration Process mandates a deep training in trauma before anyone can include the process in their conflict resolution skill set menu.
  • The process complements and is inclusive of all legal processes, certifications and training.

The goals of this process:

  1. To give the public a process that complements and expedites the court system should litigation ensue.
  2. To change the present family law paradigm so that clients are still armed with independent legal advice and knowledge/informed consent of the legal model while helping them to explore family-focused interest-based solutions as opposed to individual rights-based positions.
  3. To address the problem of non-disclosure/outstanding disclosure before litigation-bound parties enter the courtroom (minimize the risk of disclosure motions).
  4. To make participants feel more comfortable and safe by employing a ‘we care’ team-based approach, employing trauma responsive professionals to assist in the process.
  5. To allow for expertly crafted solutions with the assistance of neutral family and financial professionals.
  6. To reduce the workload of the judiciary by getting the case ‘conference-ready’ with a concise compassionate courtroom report summary that we hope will ultimately replace case conference/settlement conference briefs (which all too often contain positions and opposing narratives rather than settlement-focused solutions)

You will gain a comprehensive understanding of:

  • Type 1 Trauma & Type 2 Trauma
  • The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
  • Systemic and Inter-Generational Trauma
  • The Importance of Polyvagal Theory and Developmental Trauma
  • Signs & Symptoms of Vicarius Trauma

The training will equip you with tools to recognize, attune to, and effectively respond to your client's trauma. Delving into resourcing practices such as transparent communication skills, you will gain strategies for regulating your nervous system for higher levels of responsiveness to workplace stressors.

Remember, you are part of a team. These resourcing techniques are invaluable for combating burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and other prevalent health concerns within professional settings.

Natalie Derbyshire

Natalie is pleased to return to the FDRIO board of directors, having first served from 2015-2017, when she departed for maternity leave.  Since then, Natalie was named Partner at Stanchieri Family Law and she has continued to work on behalf of FDRIO’s Family Violence and Complaints committees. Her most notable contribution to FDRIO to date was conceived when Hilary Linton invited Natalie to join her in planning and co-chairing the first FDRIO Unconference.

Natalie was called to the Ontario bar in 2006.  She earned her LL.B. at Osgoode Hall Law School, after having graduated cum laude with an Honours B.A. from York University in 2002. She has a passion for alternative dispute resolution and her preferred area of focus in her legal practise is collaborative family law. Natalie runs her own collaborative small study group, giving like-minded professionals the opportunity to brainstorm with one another whilst enhancing their skills, strategies, and collaborative toolkits.

She firmly believes that collaborative family law is cost-effective dispute resolution strategy that can be a recipe for a “win-win” outcome; the process can deliver excellent results for participants who are seriously committed to facilitating creative legal problem-solving in a transparent, open, honest, and respectful manner. Through interest-based negotiation, clients are able to maintain control over the resolution of issues arising from their separation.

In addition to her roles with FDRIO, Natalie also serves as a director for York Collaborative Practice, and she is a member of East York Kiwanis.

When Natalie is not at work, she most loves spending time with her daughter.
